Statement
Hazel Gelman was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. When describing a physical system by representation various possible states can be predicted. Depending on how you observe it, the states that you see in one representation may not be the same in another representation. Spontaneous transitions occur in dynamic systems and a transient event can be made visible, although its position may be only one of various possible results. I find Inspiration in New Science , for instance particle physics and the science of complexity and chaotic systems, Chinese and Japanese art, the Tao, animation and Kabuki Theater.. I admire the insight of Joseph Beuys , who felt intuitively that paint had its own reality and it didn't represent something else, Mondrian's understanding of the horizontal and vertical fields of force and his science/nature abstraction and Fontana's conception of aesthetics being compared to nature in which 'change is the essential condition of existence'. I mainly use acrylic paints and have been experimenting with gels and texture mediums, recent work is in enamel and oil. By investigating the nature of materials my work relates to science in its methods, surfaces are created in the spirit of experimentation, matter becomes energy and a complex relationship follows when time is crucial.
