Statement
Veiled
In a consumer driven society clothes can create identity, or even take over who we actually are. In these images the clothes veil the face and form a persona of their own, disturbing expectations. The kitsch fabrics and patterns, stereotypical western symbols of femininity, are almost seen to be suffocating the person, hiding their face from view but exposing other areas and creating a sense of vulnerability. The sense of being dominated or conditioned into a way of thinking what is conventionally beautiful by media and advertising parallels with how some women in other cultures are forced into a certain way of dressing and covering themselves out of modesty.
