The birth of my son has been the main influence on my life and has therefore inspired my art practice. The fundamental core of my work stems from the maternal thoughts and feelings that I experienced during my pregnancy through to my daily experiences of parenting. My recent work focuses on ‘motherhood’ and approaches the complexities of the mother-child relationship.

The concerns and conflicts linked to motherhood are the ideas that underpin my painting entitled ‘Overprotect’ and related emotions such as love and fear are themes investigated within this work. My intention with this painting was to produce a piece of artwork that questions the issues that surround the protection and overprotection of children.

These questions, together with influences from other artists such as Mary Kelly, Chuck Close and Barbara Kruger resulted in this large-scale work.

The final painting evolved from a photograph of my son, which was edited using computer software and layered with bold text. Emulsion was applied to the background areas of the canvases and acrylic paint used for the detail. The black and white paint was applied to the three canvases using a range of techniques. One of which was the airbrush technique, inspired by the process used by Chuck Close to produce his series of huge black and white photorealist portrait paintings.
