Statement
Land scape and the world in which we are surrounded by has always been a great influence on my work. My main perspective on this is that of an aerial view. The marks that man makes on the land are so magnificant and impressive from above, it opens up a whole new world and shows the skill of man kinds mind and body. I have dealt with a combination of rual and urban landscapes, but have always been facinated by the line and repetition, the concept of man and the way in which we can construct our environment.
The history of land for ever being reworked by different generations lead me to experiment with different sculptural materials, which I could manipulate ina similar way. I began making cuts in Jesmonite, layering new materials on top, drawing strange patterns that were a by product of a ploughed field, but to me were beautiful and exact. Recently, the materials I use have become increasingly important to me, the physical connection when dealing with the work. As technology has become increasingly important to our world, I wanted to move away from that and craft my materials by hand, feeling the physical weight of my work, give it a dominate presence.
This has become clearer in my more recent works, which have been conmsidering urbanisation and hyper real environments. I felt the need to use industrial materials such as concrete, aluminium, steel and flurescent paints. coastal landscapes with a a certain organic quality coming from the curves and the colouring of the concrete. I began creating coastal landscapes with a certain organic quality coming from the curves and the colouring of the concrete. But, then combined it with fluorescent lines and grids covering the surface and showing a type of city plan, which was half based on reality, and also manipulated to fit the work I was making. My influences were coming from man made grid cities, and architectural movements such as, 'Archgram' and 'Superstudio'.
I find their designs amusing but also not completly ridiculous, as we are moving into a very tecnological age. At present there are more people living in urban areas than ever before, hence the reason for manipulating the land for man's benefit. In some manners my work is an attempt to show this increase in urbanisation, but also the beauty of Man's creatin and our natural instinct to create our own environment.
