Debra L Singh Statement
Debra's work seeks to represent an aspect of modern society and, as Guy Debard says in Society of the Spectacle, "Everything that was directly lived has receded into representation", she attempts to preserve a nostalgic snapshot in time, while exploring society’s changes in social interaction, through the medium of paint. The process of painting gives her the freedom to be both expressive and experimental. By using painting and drawing as a basis for her work, she is better able to connect and feel for her subject matter. The fluidity of paint allows for easy manipulation of surface and, through palette and tonality, Debra tries to inject a tension and atmosphere in her work. Artists such as Hammershai, Richter and Whistler have influenced her painterly style. Much of Debra's work is based on direct observations of people in the city and through the medium of the internet, Social Networking sites such as Face book and Chat-rooms. Debra investigates how the use of social communication technology appears to be evermore present in our daily lives and what the social implications of this might be. Her figurative paintings are a subversion of the portrait - a psychological view, where the sitter has become democratised. Through cropping images her work attempts to describe a viewpoint as the Flaneur', taking an intimate view of society’s anonymity and social isolation.
