<%@LANGUAGE="JAVASCRIPT" CODEPAGE="1252"%> CV and Statement
Elise was brought up in a large and active family on the North-East Coast of England. Having lived most of my life in a small suburb by the sea Elise has an appreciation for vast expanses of space, ever changing scenery and a sense of community.
Studying in the busy 'material world' of the City has made Elise much more aware of global issues such as consumerism and its ability to make the individual feel claustrophobic through sheer volume in every day life.

Elise's concerns are with paint and the processes involved in its complex language. The artist maintains that the subject matter evolves from the painterly framework, a device to construct the paintings. Nevertheless. the artist insists that the actual ‘subject’ of her painting is the relationship between order and chaos when dealing with an overload of marks made on the canvas and that the essence of the work reveals itself through the process of making rather than the content and any implied narratives.
By layering paint in a chaotic, quasi-abstract fashion; pouring, splashing and smearing, the surface builds in a random manner. The selected imagery is varied and depends purely on the abstract shapes made from the paint pours therefore is arbitary to the process itself. The viewer is drawn to the complex surface of the painting and how it is made. The ‘subject’ of the work is a journey into the language of paint - the process and balance - for Elise they reflect the way she sees the world, seeking for balance within a calamity of imagery and communicative processes.
