Elayne Barre Statement and CV
The work in this series is an ongoing investigation of the roads less travelled, the absence of being, and, ultimately, isolation. There is a menacing romanticism to the idea of seclusion in a town that lived in another era, and the viewer is forced to recognise their response to this as they are the only beings placed in the landscapes. What attracted me to producing this series is the notion of experiencing the opposite feeling that your surroundings should inspire; a sense of freedom in an environment that should commonly evoke fear, or excitement when we are taught to feel sheltered. Ultimately questioning why? What for? And how?
Elayne visited North America, specifically Idaho and Oklahoma to take these shots. The image of Elk City was the start of a snow storm at 3pm in the Afternoon in July! Elayne described it as a bizarre occurrence but also a wonderful place.
