Work placement at the Lloyd Gill Gallery

Brief

The Gallery can offer an in depth experience to any work placement wanting to gain an insight into the organisation of a gallery. My aim as a director is to assist placements the very best I can through rigor training. The training process is to register a detailed work ethic, which will induce a correct work attitude.
During the placement, students will be given the opportunity to gain skills and develop skills further. My aim being that the students will be able to take the skills learnt and process for later use in the work habitat.

Job role

Administrator

The gallery administrator’s role is answering correspondence via telephone or email. It is not necessary that the placement makes all correspondence through the telephone, but is some thing that I would encourage. Another important role of the administrator is to liaise with all artists this is normally through the telephone or email. When using the telephone, correct manner is to be maintained at all times. This will mean the placement must be pleasant and agreeable at all times. The administrator will work towards completing the press release for each exhibition and would be sent to me via email. I encourage correct spelling and grammar throughout the press release as bad spelling and bad grammar reflects badly on the gallery. Once the press released is completed, the administrator will work towards completing the monthly newsletter. The newsletter is an integral composite of the galleries press campaign. Again, spelling and grammar must be accurate. The newsletter is often graphical and user friendly with hyper links to the
gallery website. As part of the work placement, the student must complete the newsletter to the gallery standard.

Assistant curator

The assistant curator will work along side the director and will discuss curatorial ideas fluently throughout the work placement period. Main tasks include searching for Artists via the internet and where possible studio visits. Communication skills will develop through the placement period and confidence will grow as more correspondence is made to the selected Artists. It is integral that the placement grasps a deep understand of contemporary context and is familiar with modernism and post-modernism. I will personally encourage and assist where necessary. As part of the placement, I would suggest that a short essay is written to accompany the exhibition. Spelling and grammar must be accurate at all times. The essay will develop understanding further of the exhibition and is generally good practice for a curator.

Installation/Art handler

The gallery has a strict procedure to handling artwork and installing artwork. Work placements will be shown how to correctly handle work of different mediums types. When unwrapping artwork, placements must be careful. The placement will be shown how to wrap and pack artwork to gallery standard. The gallery has a professional hanging system, which is regularly used and there is a particular way of fitting and installing. The work placement will be assisted while installing and hanging work.

Skills gained while working at the Lloyd Gill Gallery

While it is totally up to the work placement to what level these skills are gained to, I would personally encourage that they are strengthened by the end of the work placement. My overall aim to ensure that Weston University Campus student’s, feel that they have had a highly enjoyable yet highly educational introduction  to the gallery industry.

Communication: Verbal and written. Placement will have developed contextual language and use of language to a strengthened position.

Organisation: Work ethic and organisational abilities will be increased.

Research: A recognised ability of research through Internet and literature.

Marketing abilities: PR and marketing is an integral attribute of the galleries existence. The skill to find opportunities will be encouraged.

I would like to advise students to keep work ethic as high as possible. I would hope that the experience of working at my gallery is an enjoyable one.

Example of previous internship

ANTRIA PELEKANOU - Chief Curator for a moving exhibition
During my internship at the Lloyd Gill Gallery I have gained valuable information about how a gallery is run and got the exciting opportunity to curate my own exhibitions.  I have received great publicity in magazines such as A-N, Aesthetica and some local newspapers.  This has boosted my confidence to start a project I had in mind for years. A Moving Exhibition.  An exhibition which will move from one location to another.  I am also a Fine Artist, exhibited work in the UK as well as USA and Europe in the last five years.  I am currently studying Fine Art at the University of East London, MASTERS Level.
The reason I have chosen to create this event is because I feel that I have to present an opportunity to art graduates that have completely left the art scene since graduating.  This is also an exciting opportunity for current art students and professional artists. Another reason I have created this ambitious curatorial project, is because I will like to further my education to PHD level.  This experience will enhance my knowledge and expertise in the Curatorial Practices and therefore I can choose the correct path for my future.
