Jack Beswick Title of Body of Work: ‘MAYO’ ‘If I’ve walked it twenty, I’ve walked it a hundred times’.That’s the start. I have become so attached to the area , that the indelible images I have digested trigger a heightened level of confidence to make the right marks on the canvas. These paintings are part of a larger ongoing body of work entitled ‘MAYO’, depicting abstract landscapes of the far West of Ireland, centred on and around Achill Island and Clew Bay, where I’ve been visiting family for forty years. The dramatic changing weather, sometimes bleak and ferociously wild, pushes the landscape shape and colours to sometimes crazy extremes. Many proportions and colours are clearly exaggerated or distorted to emphasize the changing elements, while representing and accentuating the character and soul of the area. The unpredictability of letting paint flow freely without too much control adds a huge element of anticipation, excitement and ultimately satisfaction when it all comes together. cv As an alternative to Art School I started as a junior in a ‘Point of Sale’ Design and Production House. Like a trade apprentice I spent six to twelve months in each of the departments learning and honing skills in design, finished art, typography I sacrificed my true love of art to climb the career ladder , which naturally means I now have a lot of catching up to do !It is only since 2005 that I have concentrated more time to developing serious bodies of work.
