Body on Canvas
My body as a source of reflection, an improvisation, I let the work and my body flow freely onto the canvas. I play with my mind.
With an intention to liberate both mind and body with paint, I use the canvas as my reflective medium. I don't think consciously until my hand stops the flow of the paint.
This isn't the usual way that I work with paint, but I wanted to place myself in an uncomfortable situation in order to break free from restrictive ways of working and also seeing.
My intention is to share a sense of liberation and freedom. A longing to break free.
Emigre
Pencil drawing on paper, from a series of five drawings taken from a private sketchbook that I had kept for two years. I wanted to reveal parts of the private, in order to share a side of myself which is veiled and unseen. Memory and identity are things which I focus on during the process of drawing, I have a desire to draw out the hidden, the things that are kept from us, either by ourselves or a heirarchy.
Untitled and Silent Stare
Tortured, twisted human figures morph into tree trunks – both gruesome and lyrical. This is an agonising insight into personal anguish, whilst also revealing something about a universal unease. Torment and repressed emotion is allowed to surface. Obsessively and intricately rendered.
Artist Statement
Within my practice I focus on revealing the hidden, what is unseen, unheard and unnoticed, and I use fear as a tool. I think it is important to put ourselves in fearful situations; to do something that unnerves us. Fear is an emotion just like any other, but is one that - when experienced - makes you feel alive.
I aim to influence others by expressing my sexuality and exploration of nature through mediums such as painting, drawing, poetry, film and performance. I am interested in how our bodies interact/connect with nature, movement and sound, and the unconscious and female identity.
