Janet Curley Cannon
Janet Curley Cannon

Janet Curley Cannon's art is an observation on the peripheral characteristics of the urban environment.  She draws inspiration from the everyday surroundings of a place, capturing the accumulation of history built up on its surfaces and structures before they're lost through destruction or regeneration.

Posters, stickers and flyers are put intentionally in public spaces to grab our attention then left to slowly decompose when no longer of any relevance.   City surfaces will be varnished with the film of daily life, bearing witness to the effects of weather and the passage of time.  These are the marker's of a place's visual language, providing glimpses into the everyday, ordinary events that make up the rituals and habits of contemporary life.

Janet captures these worn surfaces and pieces of urban detritus through photography and drawing, then digitally combines, manipulates, alters and rearranges selections.  She plays with the text, the textures and the branding, musing on societies interests and concerns.  Her work mixes traditional and digital media using many experimental digital print processes and includes prints, collage, mixed media pieces, video, and sculptural installations.

Janet was Artist-in-Residence at South Hill Park Arts Centre in Berkshire in 2007-08 and has been a tutor in the Digital Media Centre there since 2005.  Her digital animations have been selected for many international festivals and curated projects including the Liverpool Biennial Independents, London's Gasworks Gallery, and recently the BBC Big Screens program.  Her print work has been widely exhibited including the International Print Triennial 2009 in Krakow, Poland and a prizewinner at the Through the Lens exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol in 2008.  She has been pushing the boundaries of digital printmaking since completing her Masters degree at Camberwell College, London in 2005 and her work is documented in a number of recent publications including the upcoming book by Richard Noyce, 'Critical Mass – Printmaking Beyond the Edge' to be published by A&C Black in autumn 2010.
