Marianne Rustad Statement: Marianne is a young silversmith and jewellery-maker whose work explores what George Herbert called 'heaven in ordinarie' - that sense of beauty that persistently pierces our mundane daily living, or our sense of dislocation and fragmentation. In playing with - and juxtaposing - rare, common and uncommon materials, Marianne questions how we signal and construct value and style - for example, can a unique, fragile fragment of charcoal ever compare to those commonplace isometric carbon crystals that we consider so valuable? And is it primarily design and craftsmanship that transform the ordinary into something precious? In making this exhibition collection, Marianne exposes herself to these questions. She has also enjoyed creating work which exposes the anthropomorphic way in which we visually assimilate objects. Marianne's jewellery takes inspiration from Weston-super-Mare's local landmarks and coastline - when these forms are abstracted and rescaled into the miniature world of jewellery, the results are often surprising and intriguing. Above all, Marianne invites you to touch and interact with these objects - to expose and explore the different compositions, surfaces and qualities that engage you. 'Exposure' is Marianne's first exhibition. She is currently studying silversmithing and jewellery design at the John Cass School of Art & Design - one of the UK's foremost places for studying these age-old skills. She hopes you enjoy her explorations, and find a bit of 'heaven in ordinarie' in what she's put together.
