These images stem from my longstanding interest in British urban scenery. I view areas of sprawl and decay not as eyesores but as subject matter to be explored. An accidental beauty occurs where the modern is adjoined by a crumbling past - a result of man made change and natural decline, with nature in control. To my eyes everything - weeds, litter, brutalist architecture - can have a glowing significance. Form is a secondary, surface concern.
To create symbolic paintings I have united elements of different landscapes and added figures, under the guidance of my imagination.
These figures include cemetery statues, dolls and female forms and have been placed in their surroundings to convey certain states such as loss or threat. Their isolation is intended to evoke an eerie melancholy.
