STATEMENT

My work is concerned with the physicality of the painted surface. In other words, it is about the paint and the supports themselves rather than with creating a recognisable image, or having any symbolic, spiritual or emotional content.

Instead of covering the supports, whether wood, plywood, canvas or acrylic sheeting, I expose them and integrate them into the final image. My intention is to bring “Formalism” into the twenty first century and that the work should engage the viewer in an in-depth visual enquiry.

“Formalism” was written about by Clive Bell, Roger Fry. However, it was Clement Greenburg who coined the word “Formalism” in the 1950&60’s. These academics have all influenced my work as have the artists Robert Ryman and Andrew Bick.
