ARTIST STATEMENT

The current photographs are all images taken from my recent installation.
Images showing the true nature of sound.

Installation statement:

This installation is a continuation of my exploration
into understanding sound as a visual platform. It focuses
on visualising the movement of music, unlike my previous pieces
which allowed the viewer to dictate the sound giving it an individual
stamp.
An artist is always on a quest, in most cases (including myself),
it’s a quest for beauty. I believe understanding the main influence
behind my work (music) will open my eyes to that inner beauty I’m
searching for.

I’ve been walking the boundary between art and music for
the past nine years. I want to try to understand the emotional
effects music has on me. Previous works include drawing to music
and creating my own sonic landscapes, in a sense this piece is
a combination of the two, it’s visualising a sonic landscape.
The Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky spent his whole life
working on these very subjects. He wrote many books discussing
his theories, theories I have taken on board. His theories centred
around colour relationship in conjunction with musical tone.
He adored jazz music and loved Tchaikovsky, this love is projected
in his work. Kandinsky worked in 2D form, but added his own
extra dimension through his research. I’m taking his research
into the fourth dimension and I only wish I can get to the level
Kandinsky found himself.

The title of the piece has come from an Echobelly track, recorded
in 1993, ‘Bellyache’, a dark song about abortion. The title is taken
from the passage ‘I’m falling, falling, echoing your sound’, and
‘Echoing Your Sound’ is what I wrote on a card at Mum’s funeral.
The people who know my work will be aware of the importance of
Echobelly’s music- to cut a very long story short, it was Echobelly’s
music which took me out of a large spate of anxiety attacks suffered
when I was 17. This is the main reason why I entered this seemingly
endless exploration into sound and music.
