Tom Keevill Artist Statement Natural disasters can wreck havoc on our environment, we have little control over them and they are easily ignored with a perceived safety of our everyday lives. Our attachment to familiar places and people make it difficult to settle again when everything is reshuffled. I deal with this change, reminding people of the past by leaving evidence of the erased human interactions with their environment. I intertwine figure and landscape revealing a fear of danger, whether that is real or fictional, by replacing, imposing, removing and comparing multiple found images. This is then developed through a drawing and painting process. The abstract painterly qualities, which distort but also unify an otherwise disjointed collection of images, allow the possibility to adjust the emotion that is conveyed in its combination of elements. I play with warm and cool colours and the opacity or translucency of paint, pushing and pulling parts back and forward across the various combined picture spaces, sometimes working with the illusion of depth and sometimes against it.
