I work primarily with pencil or silver point on gesso board. I often select a single solitary subject to draw ‐ severing it from the world and re‐containing it so it remains suspended within a peculiar empty landscape.
Absence is an unconsciously recurring theme in my recent work, the empty wig, the detached horses tail, a solitary empty draw, allowing them to take on an intensity and charge of their own as well as adding to the sense of melancholia.
The quality of line is also very important to me, I draw with individual lines rather then tone, mapping contours and feeling my way around an object or in the case of the hair works‐built up with hundreds of individual lines as each line
transforms into single hairs, building up a volume through accumulations of layered lines.
I have experimented with gravity and suspension, the tensions that can exit within the line itself and effects of placement within the frame. Placement of the boards themselves within the space is very important. I see them as sculptural objects in themselves, which has led to the gradual introduction of real objectsarranging them within the installation with the aim of creating a form of poetry
between them, the drawings and the space as a whole. I hope to achieve a particular sense or mood rather then any specific narrative or obvious statement, something that doesn’t get the message across in seconds but demands your time and requires you to adopt a specific sensibility to take it in.
